Except- instead&nbsp;of when a bell rings, I salivate at the mere mention of the word &ldquo;gravy.&rdquo;&nbsp;And with Thanksgiving coming, I&rsquo;ve got gravy on the brain. Oh, and of course- family, gratefulness, turkey, stuffing, vacation from work, and all the other things that come with the holiday.<\/p>\n<p>But mostly gravy.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an AWESOME gravy recipe I made with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bowlofdelicious.com\/2015\/11\/01\/crispy-oven-roasted-chicken-thighs-with-lemon-butter-and-thyme\/\">Crispy Oven Roasted Chicken Thighs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowlofdelicious.com\/mashed-potatoes\/\">mashed potatoes<\/a>. <em>(See? You can make it out of a lot of different kinds of ingredients.&nbsp;People usually think of it as meat-based, and indeed- many of the tastiest and most traditional gravies are made with the drippings of roast meat <em>(such as turkey on Thanksgiving!).&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But gravy can be vegetarian, and even vegan, and still very very tasty.<\/p>\n<p>There&rsquo;s a simple ratio to making the perfect gravy every time: 1 tablespoon of fat to 1 tablespoon of flour to 1 cup of liquid. And liberal amounts of salt and pepper, of course! Use the fat from the top as directed in the recipe below and discard the rest or save for another use.<\/p>\n<p>Use the rest of the drippings for the broth, mixed with more broth if necessary <em>(or diluted with water, since these drippings pack a ton of flavor!).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And to make this delicious mushroom gravy: just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowlofdelicious.com\/sauteed-mushrooms\/\">saut&eacute; some chopped mushrooms in the fat<\/a>, add some flour to thicken, add some broth, salt, and pepper, and viola! Gravy. If you are vegan, use olive oil <em>(or another neutral tasting oil)<\/em> and vegetable broth for your base.<\/p>\n<p>This can also be used as a base for anything that requires cream of mushroom soup. Just add some cream or milk and you have a staple ingredient that&rsquo;s MUCH healthier and tastier than its canned counterpart.<\/p>\n<p>A quick note about the flour: whenever I need a thickener, I use regular old white flour. Whole wheat flour doesn&rsquo;t work as well. If you follow a gluten-free diet, use cornstarch&nbsp;<em>(it works just as well but tends to not reheat as well, which is why I use flour).&nbsp;<\/em>If you follow a grain-free diet, use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00FTCE63G\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00FTCE63G&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=bowofdel-20&amp;linkId=CX2SHAXBJECYGXOQ\" rel=\"nofollow\">arrowroot powder<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=bowofdel-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00FTCE63G\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" data-pin-media=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=bowofdel-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00FTCE63G\"> or another grain-free thickener.<\/p>\n<p>Now, this is the MOST IMPORTANT PART. Are you paying attention? Good. Serve this gravy over mashed potatoes, but be sure to make a gravy lake by forming a crater&nbsp;in your potatoes in which to store an obscene amount of gravy. It&rsquo;s the only way to eat it.
