And while these are made with bacon and bacon grease for extra decadence, you can easily make them vegetarian or vegan if you prefer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Homemade refried beans are best when eaten hot and right away, but you can also make these and save them for later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this post I&rsquo;ll explain how to make the BEST refried beans ever, and be sure to check out the video! This is such a yummy, hearty side dish that&rsquo;s packed with plant-based protein. You&rsquo;re going to love it.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ingredients-and-substitutions\">Ingredients and Substitutions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Pinto Beans<\/strong> &ndash; I used canned, but you can cook them from dried beforehand if you prefer. Pinto are the most traditional for refried beans, but you can use black beans or other beans as a substitute if you like.<\/li><li><strong>Bacon &ndash; <\/strong>only two slices.<\/li><li><strong>Onion<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Spices: <\/strong>Chili powder and cayenne pepper. You can omit the cayenne if you don&rsquo;t want them spicy <em>(or use more to pump up the heat)<\/em>. Add other spices if you like, such as cumin, garlic powder, etc.<\/li><li><strong>Chicken Broth &ndash; <\/strong>vegetable broth or water <em>(in a pinch)<\/em> will work, too.<\/li><li><strong>Fresh cilantro &ndash; <\/strong>you can omit this if you like.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-make-homemade-refried-beans\">How to make Homemade Refried Beans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>First, <strong>cook the bacon. <\/strong>After it&rsquo;s cool, chop into small pieces. Leave the grease in the skillet.<\/li><li><strong>Saut&eacute; the onions <\/strong>in the bacon grease until nice and browned and softened.<\/li><li>Then,<strong> add the spices<\/strong> &ndash; chili powder and cayenne pepper &ndash; and stir to coat the onions in them<\/li><li><strong>Add the beans and chicken broth. <\/strong>Use a potato masher to mash to the consistency you prefer. Continue to heat if the beans seem too thin, keeping in mind that they will continue to thicken as they cool.<\/li><li>Turn off the heat and <strong>stir in chopped cilantro and the chopped bacon.<\/strong><\/li><li>Serve!
