My MIL made this all the time, and she was from the Azores. Her recipe was almost identical to this one. The only difference is that she used split green peas, and that is what gave it the greenish look. She also used kale. She always used a chuck roast with the both hot and mild Portuguese sausage. It was the best.

Delicious! I love linguica and live in New England so can get the Portuguese sausages in the grocery store. we grow kale and potatoes, this was a great use of the little tiny potatoes I usually don’t want to deal with. I’ve made similar soups, but never added beans, that really rounds it out and gives the soup even more heft for my husband.

Hi! If you read the post you’ll see I already addressed this. When I originally published this recipe I had come across some inaccurate information in my research from usually reliable resources leading me to believe the two soups were one in the same, and people chimed in to correct me! The URL is the same because it’s a royal pain to change a URL, but I wrote a whole paragraph in the post explaining what happened and the differences between the two soups. Thanks for chiming in!

I can tell you what it isn’t. Caldo Verde. Caldo Verde literally translates to Green Broth. The broth is definitely not green. And the main ingredient are collards greens not Kale. And there are no beans in this soup. Sorry.

I use pretty much the same recipe, but I also use sliced cabbage. I start out by simmering a beef or pork roast also, as the the family likes lots and lots of meat.

I make my own Kale Soup and a few variations I use are using Turkey Linguica with the casing pulled off and crumbled. I also use small white beans that I lightly crush which gives a nice consistency to the soup. Other than these two changes my recipe follows yours quite closely

Excellent–my husband loved it! We didn’t have the sausage, so we used 93/7 grass fed ground beef and “healthy” hot dogs, seasoned all well, and it turned out great, believe it or not :) Well done!
