So glad you liked it! It would be delicious on toasted rye bread.

Great recipe and suggestions along with explanations! I have eaten smoked salmon on bagels for years, many times while traveling in southern Europe and Turkey…for breakfast. You nailed this recipe, Elizabeth! It truly is quick and easy. Also, agree with all of your suggestions (dill, preparing the onions, olives in lieu of capers). For me, using toasted english muffins instead of bagels was a welcome change, and one that I look to repeat. Less bread is more proportionally balanced with the other ingredients…and more healthy. My deviations to your recipe (which I don’t feel are necessary…just sharing in case they are helpful to someone else): (1) Skipped the tomatoes because eating them with fish can make the fish taste “fishy” (particularly canned tuna), but maybe that is something unique to my tastebuds; (2) Added some thinly sliced cucumber, which was good; (3) Tried some toasted sesame seeds on top of each open-face muffin (because I had them on hand and like to experiment) but not sure I could taste their flavor…maybe I needed to add more or just go with your recommendation of Everything Bagel seasoning. Wondering how good (or bad) this would be by using toasted rye bread instead of english muffins…? Will have to try it.

I ran out of bagels and wondered whether I could substitute an English muffin for one of my favorite indulgences. Adding the everything bagel seasoning was perfect. This tasted so good, and I didn’t miss the bagel at all.

Oh I feel you on lacking good bagels! In the northeast, where I’m from, there are so many options. I’ve only found one place in Austin with good bagels, and grocery-store bagels are a hard NO for me :-) SO happy you liked this, and I love the idea of using a buttered English muffin instead of cream cheese.

I have been eating LBCC for 50 years now since my earliest memories and it has always been “soul food’ for my family. There are zero decent bagels within a 50 mile radius and therefore I have resorted to horrible store bought “bread” bagels. Today I tried this English muffin combo because I couldn’t bring myself to eat another “bagel”. I used butter on a hot, well toasted muffin instead of cream cheese and topped it with thick lox, thin sliced onion and cucumber and salt. It was such a sublime experience that I think I may never go back. Mind. Blown. The inevitable ridicule at family gatherings will be worth it.
