Hi Marion! It’s my understanding that Cottage Pie is made with beef and Shepherd’s pie is made with lamb. That said, I’m not an expert in UK cuisine! And that also means mine is mislabeled as shepherd’s pie :-) Since I write for a mostly American audience, and I have to be aware of what people are searching for in Google, sometimes I’ll have to name recipes the best way I can in order for it to be most helpful and accessible for my audience. Thanks for bringing this up though – I’m going to do a bit more research on the difference between the two!

Dear Elizabeth, I would love to know why so many good cooks call a Cottage Pie, made with mince meat, to be cooked, and with vegies added,, a Shepherds Pie,, which is made with ground or minced “cooked” meat, no vegies added, ??

Made it twice already first made the original way and sec made it a mexican Shepard pie by adding ground cumin chili powder and cayenne pepper both times amazing

Actually, I never defrost mine! I just toss them in frozen. Odd that yours came out watery- that never happens to me. I wonder if it was the type of frozen veggie used? I always use a mix of peas, corn, and carrots. Hm, other than that I’m stumped! Better luck next time and sorry you had a frustrating experience.

it did work but i was in a rush and forgot to leave out the frozen vegetables for a few hours and i thought it was ok as it didn’t say anything about defrosting the vegetables in the recipe and unfortunately it was very watery after baking and baking more didn’t fix it. i know it was my own fault but i think it should say that somewhere in the recipe. also season it heavily.

Shepherd’s Pie is a lamb dish. Hence “Shepherd – sheep herder”. Cottage pie is made with beef.

Made it with ground chicken and added a bit of poultry and sage seasoning. My daughter loved it and thought it looked very professional with the fork lines on the mashed potatoes:)!
